Who Does God Say You Are? Living From Your Identity in Christ

One of the most important questions you will ever answer is surprisingly simple:
"Who are you?"
Most of us answer that question by describing what we do.
I'm a parent.
I'm a business owner.
I'm a teacher.
I'm a pastor.
I'm a student.
Others define themselves by what they've accomplished.
Or by what they've lost.
Some carry identities shaped by painful words spoken over them years ago.
Not good enough.
Unwanted.
Failure.
Broken.
Rejected.
But when you come to Jesus, something extraordinary happens.
God gives you a new answer to the question:
Who am I?
The Bible tells us,

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new."
(2 Corinthians 5:17 NKJV)

Your identity is no longer rooted in your past.
It is rooted in Christ.

You Are More Than What You've Done
The world often defines people by their worst moments.
God doesn't.
Peter denied Jesus.
Moses murdered a man.
David failed morally.
Paul persecuted Christians.
Yet God refused to allow their greatest failures to become their permanent identities.
Grace rewrote their stories.
Your mistakes may be part of your story.
But they don't get to determine your identity.
Jesus does.

You Are Not What Happened to You
There is an important difference between what happened to you and who God says you are.
You may have experienced rejection.
But you are not rejected.
You may have walked through failure.
But you are not a failure.
You may have experienced loss.
But you are not defined by what you lost.
You may have experienced brokenness.
But brokenness does not get the final word over your life.
When we come to Christ, our identity becomes rooted in something circumstances cannot change.
We belong to Him.

You Are a Child of God
Romans tells us,

"The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God."
(Romans 8:16 NKJV)

Think about what that means.
You aren't trying to earn a place at God's table.
You have been invited into His family.
You don't have to perform for His acceptance.
You don't have to impress Him into loving you.
Through Christ, you belong.
And when you understand that you belong, you stop living like someone constantly trying to prove their worth.

Identity Comes Before Assignment
Before Jesus performed a miracle...
Before He preached a sermon...
Before He gathered disciples...
The Father declared,

"This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
(Matthew 3:17 NKJV)

Jesus' identity was established before His public ministry began.
The same principle matters for us.
We don't serve God to become valuable.
We serve because He has already declared us valuable.
We don't work for acceptance.
We work from acceptance.
We don't obey so God will love us.
We obey because we know we are loved.
Identity always comes before assignment.

Stop Trying to Become Who You Already Are
Many believers spend their lives trying to earn something Jesus has already given them.
Trying to become accepted.
Trying to become worthy.
Trying to become loved.
But the Gospel announces something radically different.
In Christ...
You are forgiven.
You are accepted.
You are redeemed.
You are chosen.
You are a new creation.
You are God's workmanship.
You are His child.
You are part of His Kingdom.
The Christian life isn't an endless attempt to convince God to give us an identity.
It's learning to live from the identity He has already given us.

Your Identity Changes Your Perspective
When you know who you are, circumstances begin to look different.
Rejection doesn't have the same power.
Failure doesn't become final.
Comparison begins to lose its grip.
Fear no longer gets the last word.
Why?
Because your identity is anchored somewhere deeper.
People may change their opinion of you.
Circumstances may change around you.
Success may come and go.
But who you are in Christ remains secure.

Your Next Step
This week, pay attention to the words you use when you think about yourself.
When your past says,
"You're still the same person you've always been,"
remember:
I am a new creation.
When shame says,
"You'll never be free,"
remember:
There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
When rejection says,
"You don't belong,"
remember:
I am a child of God.
When insecurity says,
"You have nothing to offer,"
remember:
I am God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.
Don't allow yesterday to name what Jesus has redeemed.
Learn to agree with what God says about you.
